"If you want to keep a secret,
you must also hide it from yourself."
~ George Orwell, 1984
We all know the feeling of being “Weighed Down” by a secret.
In times of stress, our time and energy seem to be largely directed towards the safe keeping of our secrets.
We need to keep them to keep us safe, yet we feel the need to share them to offload the weight of them and create intimate connections.
So do our secrets make us sick or keep us safe?
Perhaps, it’s not how much you hide a secret that’s harmful, but how often you find yourself thinking about it.
People tend to dwell more on the secrets that make them feel ashamed than on those that make them feel guilty.
Feeling of guilt can be rectified. There are motions we can make to right the situation. Shame is more about intrinsically feeling like a bad person. It can make us feel helpless or powerless, which can lead us to revisit our shameful secrets over and over.
Having a secret can feel exhausting
Secret can create an internal conflict in which a person’s need to connect with others directly clashes with their desire to keep their secret to themselves.
Join us for a night of investigating the true nature of our secrets and the consequences they carry.đź”’
