Our only security is our ability to change.
~John Lilly
Security and Safety make up one of the primary needs on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Feeling safe and secure is a primal need that must be met. When we feel unsafe, the desire and obtainment of security becomes the primary motivation. During periods of lack we are unable to create energy for any other motivations, we become obsessed with obtaining security.
There are three types of security that Maslow highlights: Physical security, emotional security, and financial security.
Physical safety refers to your body being safe where it is. When we are not physically safe, we are in a state of stress which detracts from quality of life, and the ability to critically think. This instability increases stress hormone levels and creates physical disease in the body.
Financial security is the state of being monetarily independent, and financially able to make decisions for our lives based on lifestyle and personal improvement. Financial decisions, when financially secure, are made to make progress towards self improvement rather than basic survival.
Emotional security refers to keeping company, and sharing intimacy, with those you can trust. This creates an environment in which we are able to trust our own feelings, and feel safe enough emotionally to be able to speak up about your needs should that need arise.
